Last night was the earliest I've left for the northern lights - with guests. Because there was the 31st of December last year when I ran out of the house for Vee Lake half dressed at 5:30 in the evening with my dinner still on the table. That too, was a night of geomagnetic storming.

But knowing the entire Yellowknife area was going to jam with cloud around midnight, as a high speed solar wind stream was beginning to buffet earth's magnetic field, nothing felt more important than getting out early to as far as roads would allow us, and making every second count.
